To all of
my Danish reader: I’m sorry. This is an entry with a message I cannot, in any
possible way, convey only in Danish. This needs to be read by whomever finds
this entry. It needs to be understood by whomever wants to understand it.
Please read
with care.
As I
already told you earlier, there has been a commotion the night between Sunday and
Monday. At Glen Africa, there are many different animals, and when we arrived,
we were told with pride that, at the moment, Glen Africa was also housing a
rhino to keep it safe from poaching.
I could see the rhino from my window and we could see it walk around from our quarantine zone. That night, though, our rhino, Isabella, was shot. And poached, no more than 10 meters from our sleeping quarters.

Nobody goes unaffected by this. I didn’t get to know Isabella, and for that I am
sad. Also, I’m sad to see such a beautiful animal lose its life because of some
old superstition and idea. That is just about the limit of my sadness, because
I’m also angry, and frustrated, and hateful, and clueless as to why people
would kill such a beautiful animal, just to get the horn.
It was full moon last night and very light. Apparently, the poachers had staked out the entire farm to know where we were. The kill happened short 25 minutes after we all went to bed, and it took them just 4 minutes to hack off the horn. It saddens me to know that had we stayed up later, and prevented the kill that night, the poachers would have come back later. Or we might have been killed.

However,
guys, I’m not just writing this to make a sad tale of a beautiful rhino. I’m
writing this because I arrived in South Africa oblivious, to the best, of what
was going on. Oblivious of the threat poaching causes, and oblivious to the
lengths that these poachers to go. This is a serious issue, and I believe
people in other countries are severely undereducated when it comes to this.
This is sad. This is horrible and devoid of any human feelings. Humanity even. Poachers are ruthless.

Isabella
was shot, and she was poached because of her horn. This is a fate many rhinos
face and that is why rhinos are going to be extinct. In South Africa, rhinos
are shot in zoos for their horn.
So
poachers, if you by the off chance should read this, please rest assured that I
wish all bad things upon you, your family and their family, too.
And for the rest of you, please, please take this chance to know more about poaching of rhinos and maybe find a way to contribute to preventing poaching. This is a serious matter. Please treat it as such.
For your knowledge and education, I have taken the liberty to add pictures because this message would be powerless as it is only words. My hope is that you one day, now knowing of the horrendous truth of poaching, will take action and maybe, just maybe help to do something about it.
